 4-LAYER TWIN-SENSOR™

Over the past few years, Stohlquist has been busy developing and testing our latest waterproof/breathable 4-layer drywear fabrics. Stohlquist's 4-layer Twin-Sensor™ utilizes the best DWR treatments, durable nylon shell fabrics, and waterproof/breathable treatments to provide the ultimate protection and comfort in drywear.

  • The 4-layer Twin Sensor™ waterproof/breathable fabric combines both a hydrophobic and hydrophilic membrane, providing the best performance in waterproofness and breathability in both fresh and salt water environments.
  • The outer nylon shell fabric is coated with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish to prevent wetting-out, which further improves the shell fabric's ability to breath.
  • A hydrophobic microporous coating does not allow water droplets to pass through, but does allow moisture vapor to freely pass through and escape.
  • The hydrophilic laminate absorbs and transports moisture vapor away from the body, helping to increase breathability, and reduce the feeling of "wetness", as the build-up of moisture vapor inside your suit increases.

 

 

3-LAYER RAMPART™

Especially suited for salt water environments, Stohlquist's new 3-layer Rampart™ waterproof/breathable fabric provides exceptional comfort and protection. Stohlquist's 3-layer Rampart™ features a rugged DWR treatment, durable nylon shell fabric, and a nonporous waterproof/breathable PU membrane.

  • The 3-layer Rampart™ waterproof/breathable fabric features a nonporous PU hydrophilic membrane, providing optimal long term breathability and waterproofness in salt water environments.
  • The outer nylon shell fabric is coated with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish to prevent "wetting-out", which further improves the shell fabric's ability to breath.
  • The hydrophilic PU membrane absorbs and transports moisture away from the body by allowing water vapor to collect and pass through gaps between the molecules of the PU membrane. The partial pressure and increased heat on the interior of the suit allow moisture to pass through these gaps. As your body heat increases, the gaps between the molecules increase, allowing for further breathability.
  • The PU nonporous membrane cannot become clogged with salt particles over time, which can happen to porous membrane fabrics that are not properly rinsed after exposure to salt water. This means that repeat exposure to salt water will not diminish breathability over time. Note that rinsing with fresh water is still advised after exposure to salt water.

 


DRYWEAR CARE & MAINTENANCE

DRYSUITS, DRYTOPS, AND DRYPANTS WILL AGE PREMATURELY IF NOT CARED FOR AND STORED PROPERLY.
Following the below instructions will help to extend the life of your drywear, and ensure that the waterproof breathable fabric, waterproof zippers, and latex seals perform at their best.

 

WASHING

  • Always be sure to wear a liner under drywear and hand wash infrequently. A liner or baselayer will help reduce wear from interior soiling.
  • Rinse your garment with fresh water after each use to remove sand and soil; If necessary, hand wash your garment in warm water using mild soap, or a synthetic cleaner such as McNett Synthetic Fabric Cleaner or Nikwak Tech Wash, and rinse well. Be sure to treat latex gaskets after washing.
  • Garments may be treated with a DWR refreshment product (e.g. McNett ReviveX®, Nikwax Waterproofing). Note that some DWR products require heat to “activate” or “set” the DWR treatment. Any product that has a neoprene or latex neck should not be subjected to excessive heat (such as an iron or clothes dryer). There are several products on the market that do not require heat to activate the DWR treatment.
  • Allow garments to hang dry out of direct sunlight. Do not machine dry.

 

STORAGE
  • Prior to storage, ensure that your garment is clean and dry. Do not let garments sit damp for extended periods.
  • Loosely fold up gear or hang with the zipper closed. Never fold garments across the zipper chain, in order to ensure a waterproof seal.
  • Always store your gear in a cool dry setting, away from direct sunlight. Avoid storing drywear in excessively hot or humid locations, such as inside your vehicle during warm weather.
  • Correctly storing your Stohlquist drywear will noticeably increase its life, and ensure the best performance.

 

ZIPPER CARE

  • Stohlquist uses the very best TiZip® products in our drysuits, but care must be taken to ensure correct operation and optimal performance.
  • Zippers must be treated carefully, as they are sensitive and prone to damage. The most common causes of zipper leakage are due to not completely closing the zipper, or having debris in the zipper chain or closing end. Avoid stepping on zippers, forcing debris in the zipper teeth, when donning/doffing.
  • Be sure that the zipper chain is free of dirt or sand before and after each use.
  • Never store garments that are folded across the zipper chain, as these can damage the waterproofness of the zipper.
  • Clean and lubricate the zipper occasionally, if desired, with the provided TiZip® lubricant or other silicone based zipper lubricant (e.g. McNett Zip Care™).
  • Be thoughtful when closing zippers; avoid snagging the zip flap or lining when closing the zipper.
  • Never force a jammed zipper. Unzip, check the jammed point for obstruction or damage, and then carefully try again.

 

LATEX GASKET CARE

  • Latex gaskets are vulnerable to UV and oil based contaminates such as lotions, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
  • Gaskets should be carefully trimmed to fit as described below. Stohlquist does not recommend pre-stretching latex gaskets, as this will decrease the life of the gasket.
  • Always remove jewelry and watches before putting on garments with latex seals.
  • Treating gaskets regularly with a protectant (e.g. McNett Seal Saver™) will help extend the life and comfort of the latex.
  • Even with proper care, latex gaskets can break down over time and with extended use. Replacement gaskets are available through Stohlquist.

TRIMMING LATEX GASKETS


Latex seals on new suits may likely need to be trimmed for proper fit. Latex has excellent memory, and in most cases does not stretch out enough with use only. We do not recommend trying to pre-stretch gaskets. Appropriate trimming eases donning/doffing, and allows the user to be warm, dry and comfortable from day one. Everyone has a different neck characteristics and size. Trimming not only reduces stress/discomfort on you, but also helps reduce the stresses put on the gasket and their bond to the suit while donning/doffing.
Trim with long bladed, sharp scissors. No swiss-army knife scissors, Exact-o knife, or razor blades, please! For neck gaskets, use the concentric rings found on the gaskets as a cutting line. Cut one ring off, test the fit, and then repeat as needed. Trim wrists very little, if at all. Ankles almost always require aggressive trimming (can need 1" or more). Trim gaskets so they are only "slightly” tight, so that you are satisfied with the fit, the comfort, and the restriction of water entry.

 

NEOPRENE GASKETS


Neoprene gaskets cannot be trimmed. When you first try one on, evaluate the overall fit of the gasket. A proper neoprene neck gasket should be snug, yet not restrictive or uncomfortable. STAYING DRY & COMFORTABLE

A TWO PART SYSTEM: SHELL & LINER

Stohlquist Drywear is designed to be used in surface water sports activities where soaking wet conditions and highly aerobic activities are undertaken. The technical performance fabrics are extremely effective in sealing out wind & water and in breathing (transporting inside perspiration out). Drywear that is highly waterproof and highly breathable is the key; but in order for drywear to be most effective, a two part system must be present: shell and liner. Without a proper liner or baselayer under your drywear, especially drysuits, the interior of the garment will feel wet and cold due to perspiration. A proper layering system, shell & liner, will provide optimal comfort and help to keep you dry.

 

PROPER LAYERING

Stohlquist's technical drywear is sophisticated, but it must be matched with the proper layering in order to be efficient at balancing heat loss, moisture production, and breathability. This is best accomplished by layering garments that can provide the below functions.

 

BASELAYER: MOISTURE MANAGEMENT

This is your next-to-skin layer. More than any other layer, the baselayer helps regulate your body temperature by moving perspiration away from your skin. Trapped inside your drywear, perspiration will leave you chilled and wet no matter how well your drywear keeps water out. The baselayer must also be able to act as a reservoir, and collect & hold body moisture away from your skin. This is especially true when you are sweating at a greater rate than the shell fabric is able to breathe out. The appropriate choice of a baselayer will be determined largely by the amount of body moisture and activity that is anticipated. The more you sweat, the more wicking & moisture retention will be required. Neoprene, cotton, and lycra materials should be avoided as they will retain water next to the skin, and keep you cold and wet. Synthetic, wicking fabrics (polypropylene), technical wool fabrics, and thin fleece garments are all excellent baselayer choices.

 

WARMTH & INSULATION

The insulating layer helps you retain heat, by providing loft and trapping air close to your body. Polyester fleece liners (e.g. Stohlquist Bunny Suit), technical wool fabrics, and synthetic vests and tights are classic examples of insulation ideal for aerobic activities. These insulating layers not only trap air, but are also made with moisture wicking fibers that help keep you dry. The proper insulating layer will provide a "thermos bottle effect"; you will stay comfortable (not cold or hot) regardless of the outside temperature.

 

SHELL: WATERPROOF/BREATHABLE PROTECTION

The outer shell (e.g. drysuit) protects you by providing a windproof and waterproof barrier. Stohlquist drysuits, drytops, and drypants offer the best in waterproof breathable protection. The added breathability of Stohlquist drywear helps to keep you comfortable by letting moisture vapor held in your baselayers escape; this is essential in staying dry and comfortable.
